Academic Excellence Track
An opportunity for highly qualified students interested in pursuing a career as a physician assistant to reserve a spot in the SHS PA Program.
The Physician Assistant program reserves a number of seats each year for outstanding candidates who enroll as freshmen in Touro’s Undergraduate Studies Department. Students who meet stringent entrance criteria and maintain high standards of achievement will be guaranteed entrance to Touro’s Physician Assistant program upon successful completion of all requirements.
The Academic Excellence Track is available to students who enroll as freshmen from high school and who meet the following criteria:
- 90+ high school average
- In schools where students are ranked, top 15% of the high school class
- Minimum combined score of 1100 for Verbal and Mathematics SAT or ACT composite score of 24
- Successful completion of four high school science courses with a grade of B or higher
- 25 hours of experience in direct patient contact or community service
Students interested in applying for the Academic Excellence Track must complete a standard Touro College admissions application for undergraduate studies and a supplemental Academic Excellence Track. Candidates who meet the entrance criteria will be considered for an interview with admissions representatives from both the PA program and undergraduate studies to make a final decision.
Students accepted for Academic Excellence Track will be admitted to an undergraduate degree program offered by the School of Health Sciences at the Bay Shore campus. Academic Excellence Track students will also be given conditional acceptance to the PA program. Students will be notified of their acceptance to each program in separate letters sent by the Office of Admissions. Students who are not accepted to the Academic Excellence Track may still be accepted to the undergraduate studies division, and may apply to the PA program as a standard candidate once they have completed the PA program prerequisites.
To maintain your status
Academic Excellence Track students must meet the following standards at all times during their undergraduate course of study:
- 3.5 cumulative GPA and a 3.3 GPA for all science courses
- Grade of B or higher in all science courses
- Successful completion of all PA prerequisites to take no longer than four years of undergraduate study
- Attendance at periodic, on-campus progress meetings with designated SHS representative
Any student who subsequently falls below the maintenance criteria may lose their Academic Excellence Track status. Students will be notified in writing by the Undergraduate Studies Department if their Academic Excellence Track status is changed. Students who lose Academic Excellence Track status will be allowed to continue their undergraduate course of study so long as they meet the college’s standards for satisfactory academic progress, and may apply to the PA program as a standard candidate once they have completed the PA program prerequisites. Any student who leaves or otherwise changes their status as a matriculated student in the undergraduate department will forfeit their Academic Excellence Track status and conditional acceptance to the PA program.
Students who are not accepted to the Academic Excellence Track, or who are accepted and subsequently lose their status, may still take advantage of other admissions supports to the PA program, including preferred admissions, if applicable.
