Mother’s Health Issues Introduced Him to Career
Frantz Augustin knew he wanted to be a nurse early on. “My family is Caribbean so everyone is either lawyers, engineers or in medicine,” Augustin laughed.
While he considered becoming a doctor, Augustin said that he was always more interested in nursing. “My mom is a diabetic, so we were in the hospital a lot while I was growing up,” he said. “Her English isn’t as good as mine, so I would translate for her. She would trust nurses more than doctors since nurses are advocates for patients. If a patient doesn’t like the medication—if the medication has too many side effects—the nurse will pass that on. Doctors prescribe medication but it’s the nurse’s job to assess the patients and see how they’re feeling.” Augustin has been practicing that role during his own clinicals. “I try to make my patients feel as comfortable as possible,” he said. “I can see when my patients are uncomfortable.”
Augustin is leaning towards working in the ICU and is considering returning for a master’s degree in nursing. His ultimate goal is becoming a nurse practitioner or a nurse anesthetist.
