Student Yehudis Hickson manages an incredible feat each day: acing her nursing classes while taking care of her four children, ages six to 13. (She gets up at five each day to study before they wake.) “It’s pretty intense,” laughed Hickson, “But it’s incredibly satisfying.”

Hickson was born in Cincinnati and moved to New York when she married. Two of her sisters are nurses and she said they inspired her to pursue the profession. “I was always fascinated with their work,” she said. In 2017, Hickson began taking college courses at Touro’s Lander College of Arts and Sciences and applied with several of her fellow classmates to SHS’s nursing program. She hopes to specialize as a labor-delivery nurse. “It’s typically a happy field,” said Hickson who was a doula when two of her sisters gave birth. “Being a wife and a mother is wonderful, but I’d also like to have the personal fulfilment of working,” said Hickson.

Big Family

Hickson has 13 siblings.
