Why get a BSN?
A nurse with a BSN is qualified for a wider array of positions, often with higher salaries and/or greater potential for higher pay. In fact, the Institute of Medicine recommends that 80% of the nursing workforce have a BSN degree by 2020. When the report was made in 2010, only 50% had such a degree; that number is now estimated at 55-60%, and growing. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations, and that it will be competitive - with registered nurses that hold a BSN having better job prospects than those without.
